Carter’s Grove is a National Historic Landmark property formerly owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF). At CWF’s request, D. R. Horne & Company (DRH) conducted a comprehensive assessment of the property’s natural, historic and archaeological resources, regulatory issues, financial considerations, and the Foundation’s mission, and developed feasible options for use, management and potential disposition.

DRH subsequently guided the successful implementation of a protected sale strategy that addressed CWF’s institutional objectives and commitment to preservation. DRH helped CWF draft a complex set of restrictions, establish enforceable protection mechanisms, and effect a transaction hailed as an innovative model for the historic preservation movement.
